ADA recommends dentists to postpone appointments to COVID-19

As of March 16th, 2020, The ADA (American Dental Association) is recommending that dentists nationwide postpone elective procedures in response to the spread of the coronavirus disease, COVID-19, across the country.

“The American Dental Association recognizes the unprecedented and extraordinary circumstances dentists and all health care professionals face related to growing concern about COVID-19,” according to the March 16 statement from ADA President Chad P. Gehani.

“The ADA is deeply concerned about the health and well-being of the public and the dental team. In order for dentistry to do its part to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the ADA recommends dentists nationwide postpone elective procedures for the next three weeks. Concentrating on emergency dental care will allow us to care for our emergency patients and alleviate the burden that dental emergencies would place on hospital emergency departments.”

Here at Dr. Jacquie Smiles, there is nothing more important to us than the safety & well-being of our patients and team. With that in mind, we wanted to give you clear guidance as to what we are doing as a practice.

All of our patients with scheduled appointments through & including April 3rd are canceled until further notice.

We have been closely monitoring every development with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The COVID-19 situation in New York is one of the most serious in the nation so far. We are compelled to take action and make sensible & safe decisions for the benefit of our patients, team, and public.

At this time, it has been recommended by the ADA (American Dental Association) that we provide only emergency dental and orthodontic care.

The phones will be fielded by our team remotely. Keeping in mind that team & patient safety is our first priority, we ask that if you believe you are experiencing a dental or orthodontic emergency and are experiencing flu-like symptoms, a cold, cough, fever or respiratory issues, please do not enter the office.

Additionally, we ask that any patients that have traveled internationally, wait 14 days until after they return to schedule any appointments. Our team will be screening all patients entering the office.

We ask that all patients entering our office thoroughly wash their hands.

“As health care professionals, it is up to dentists to make well-informed decisions about their patients and practices.  The ADA is committed to providing the latest information to the profession in a useful and timely manner.

The ADA is continually evaluating and will update its recommendation on an ongoing basis as new information becomes available. Please visit ADA.org/virus for the latest information. If you have questions that are not answered by the FAQ posted at ADA.org/virus.
