There are various options available nowadays for children and adults to straighten their teeth and fix their bites.
Braces are the most common method and have come a long way from traditional metal ones. With the newest developments in orthodontics, they are not as noticeable as before and have several more alternatives to choose from.
Four main types of braces available today:
- Metal or traditional braces
- Ceramic braces
- Lingual braces
- Clear aligners like Invisalign
Metal/traditional braces
Metal is the material used for traditional braces. They consist of brackets fixed to the front of your teeth or bands surrounding each tooth. They also have flexible wires or archwires that connect the brackets or bands. Some braces have rubber bands or metal ties that connect the brackets to the wire, creating more pressure to align and straighten your teeth. Your orthodontist may recommend wearing a headgear device at night to provide additional pressure to straighten your teeth. You can wear it and remove it as needed.
Pros
- Efficient and versatile
- No speech changes
- Recommended appointments every 4-8 weeks
- Bands can be customized with fun colors and designs
- Most affordable
Cons
- Difficult to brush and floss
- Most noticeable
- Not recommended for patients with poor oral hygiene
Ceramic braces
The brackets used in traditional braces now come in tooth-colored ceramic, making them less noticeable when you speak or smile. Ceramic braces can also be constructed from stainless steel, clear materials, or even gold.
Lingual braces
These braces use brackets attached to the backs of your teeth, facing your tongue. Lingual braces are harder to see and almost unnoticeable.
Clear aligners
Clear aligners are the most popular way to straighten your teeth. Also known as clear plastic trays or invisible braces, they fit closely onto your teeth. They gradually shift your teeth into proper alignment through gentle pressure, resulting in a straighter smile. The aligners can be removed when eating, brushing, or flossing. Wearing them for at least 22 hours daily is recommended for optimal results.
